Subaru’s Electric STI Is the Future of Performance

After years of silence on the STI front, Subaru has finally given fans a glimpse of what’s next—and it’s electric. At the Japan Mobility Show, the automaker unveiled two new STI concepts, including a battery-electric model called the Performance-E STI, a hot hatch that Subaru says “represents the future of the Performance Scene.”

Unlike the gas-powered WRX STI that bowed out in 2022 due to emissions regulations, this new EV is built from the ground up to take advantage of electric performance. Subaru claims the Performance-E STI isn’t just a flashy show car—it’s designed for everyday use, with capabilities “only possible with a battery EV.”

Underneath its sporty silhouette, the hot hatch features a cylindrical battery that lowers the center of gravity by 15% compared to past Subaru platforms, improving stability and freeing up cabin space. A new suspension system drops the hood height by over 5%, enhancing control and responsiveness. The design still nods to Subaru’s rally heritage but adds a futuristic twist with a bold three-line LED headlight setup.

Subaru hasn’t confirmed production plans yet, but it’s clear this concept marks a turning point. The electric STI signals that performance and sustainability can go hand in hand—hinting that the next generation of Subaru speed might just hum instead of roar.
