Serving St. James, NY
Subaru is the go-to brand for drivers who expect functionality and smart features from their vehicle, and the 2026 Forester and the 2026 Outback meet those expectations flawlessly. These ruggedly capable models offer stylish exteriors with Subaru-branded body language, but they are notably different in important areas. What do you need to know about the 2026 Forester and the 2026 Outback before buying your next crossover?
Performance
The 2026 Subaru Forester is available with two powertrains. The standard engine is a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder system with a continuously variable automatic transmission. It produces 180 horsepower and features all-wheel drive. A hybrid variation is also available. It pairs an electric motor with this same four-cylinder engine to deliver 194 horsepower. This system comes with the same transmission and drivetrain.
The Outback, on the other hand, uses the same 180-horsepower engine as the Forester, as well as a turbocharged variation. The turbo four-cylinder system produces 260 horsepower. Every Outback has a continuously variable automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
Appearance
The Forester’s confident style is defined by a tall, level hood with a gently sloping hood. On the sides, you will find dark molding lining the lower perimeter and the squared-off fenders. The grille is distinctive, featuring a layered pattern, and it extends outward to complement the edgy LED headlights.
The Outback is a larger model, featuring a level roof and a gently sloped hood. The rear is slightly raked, and side definition runs horizontally across the door panels and over the squared-off fenders. The grille has an almost rectangular shape, and its mesh shows off an innovative spin on a honeycomb pattern. The slender, LED-accented headlights are mounted above a secondary lighting unit that holds the fog lights.
Features
The Forester is thoughtfully appointed with features like roof rails, a hands-free power liftgate, a Harman Kardon sound system, a navigation system, a digital instrument cluster, a surround-view camera, heated seats, gesture controls for the auto climate control system, a driver attention warning, driver’s memory settings, leather upholstery, auto emergency braking, an 11.6-inch infotainment system screen, wireless smartphone app connections, and many other features.
The Outback is available with many of the Forester’s features, as well as hill descent control, a wireless charging pad, a hands-free automated driving system, a 360-degree camera, and several other options.
