Competition Subaru of Smithtown is proud to have partnered with For our Friends Rescue of Bayside, NY for the 2022 Subaru Loves Pets initiative. Competition Subaru in partnership with Subaru USA will donate $100 for every pet adopted at For our Friends Rescue for the month of October, up to a donation of $3100. Join us on October 10th from 12-3pm for an in store adoption and fostering event.  According to the ASPCA ®, each year approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters. At Subaru, we strive to be "more than a car company" and we are committed to helping all animals — including those in shelters — stay safe and healthy. Attention: All Long Islander’s, Do you love horses? Of course you do, who wouldn’t! Competition Subaru of Smithtown is excited to announce its partnership with LIPHA (Long Island Professional Horsemen’s Association). This association helps gather professional horsemen, exhibitors and members for important horse events. They are one of 16 chapters nationwide that are involved in the PHA. Not only does this association help by gathering these members and people of similar interests, but they are always willing to give back. A scholarship program is offered to the college and trade school students no matter if they are professional, associate or junior members. Helpful AND fair? Sounds a little too perfect, huh? If that wasn’t enough, they also want to raise the standards of typical horse shows on Long Island. The association offers point classes in 21 divisions. Members then can compete for awards at the end of the year. You learn so much more than horse’s and the sport, this program really strives to push for good sportsmanship in a competitive field. Educating members on conducting a healthy space where there can be friendly competition. Adults and children can learn from others and it motivates you to push yourself a little more. This program also shines a bright light on member recognition. You are currently able to view the 2021 LIPHA High Score Award Winners. You can take a look at the horses as well as the riders and so much more. Scholarships are currently being accepted for their 69th Annual LIPHA Show. This event will be held at Wolffer Estate Stables on the 14th & 15th of May. All the proceeds of this event will benefit the LIPHA Scholarship Fund. This February is Subaru Loves to Help Month and here at Competition Subaru we want to do our part in making a difference to those who are in need. Pax Christi Hospitality Center is an emergency shelter that offers guests who are homeless a safe place to go. They offer case management, drug and alcohol counseling, mental health counseling, linkages to benefits and resources in the community as well as the basics of food and shelter. Pax Christi, offers guests who are homeless a safe alternative to the streets. Over 50 active volunteers assist with cleaning, making beds, painting, serving meals and providing food and clothing for guests. Since 2007, November has been dedicated to raising awareness for people dealing with homelessness and educating the public on ways to help end homelessness. More than 500,000 Americans are experiencing homelessness and worry about staying warm as the nights grow colder. As we enter the season of giving and as nights get colder, we want to do our part in making a difference to those who need our help during National Homeless Awareness Month. Subaru Loves To Help The Subaru Loves To Help initiative is about supporting those who need it the most in our communities. Subaru of America and Subaru retailers are taking action by partnering with local homeless shelters to personally deliver water-resistant blankets and warm socks to help those in need. Last November, as part of Subaru Loves to Help, Subaru of America and its retailers provided 50,000 warm blankets to homeless shelters across the country. This year, Subaru and its retailers are doing it again to bring the total donation to 100,000 blankets to help those experiencing homelessness. In addition to more blankets, 50,000 pairs of socks will also be donated. These blankets feature soft fleece on one side and waterproof material on the other, providing comfort and function for people who may be displaced. It is estimated that every year over 30 million dogs are slaughtered for human consumption in Asian countries including China, Thailand, South Korea, Vietnam, Laos, and Indonesia. With those numbers, it seems like a hopeless task for the organizations that are desperately fighting to end the dog meat trade in Asia. No Dogs Left Behind, a non-profit international animal welfare organization, was founded by Jeffrey Beri in 2016 and leads the way in the global war against animal cruelty. Competition Subaru of Smithtown is proud to support No Dogs Left Behind and their mission to end the dog meat market and illegal dog traffickers. Jeffrey and his team have been fighting for the past several years and are committed to ending this horrific industry in Asia. The Fight Against The Inhumane Dog Meat Market Their mission extends beyond borders worldwide, advocating for the creation and enforcement of animal welfare laws, and raising awareness for a cruelty-free, sustainable world in which no animal is violated, exploited, tortured, or slaughtered for commercial goods or profit. Working hands-on with local activists through emergency response, Jeffrey’s team pulls dogs directly from slaughterhouses, dog meat trucks, wet markets, and traffickers. The NDLB team works day in and day out to save as many dogs as they can from being recklessly and inhumanely slaughtered for human consumption. How You Can Help No Dogs Left Behind Adopt A Dog – Take one or two of the broken souls into your home and give them the love they deserve. Sponsor A Dog – Sponsoring a dog is the next best thing you can do if you can’t adopt a dog. By sponsoring a dog, you are paying for their monthly food, veterinary care, and routine vaccinations until they can find a permanent home. Foster A Dog – Fosters are always needed throughout the USA and Canada. Fostering one of the survivors allows for more space in their sanctuaries so more dogs can be saved from the illegal dog meat trafficking trade in East Asia. In addition to saving more lives, fostering helps their survivors by giving them the opportunity to adjust to a home environment and decompress from the trauma that they have experienced, thereby making for a more successful, forever adoption. The Paige Elizabeth Keely Foundation is a nonprofit 501c3 (EIN-84-5024812) organization that was created in honor of Paige Keely, who passed away at the age of 6, due to a brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM). Early AVM detection can help to change the course of this disease. Competition Subaru is proud to support the Paige Keely Foundation at the Wave of Change Gala on October 6th 2021. The Paige Keely Foundation Founder and President Gina Keely created The Paige Elizabeth Keely Foundation in hopes to increase funding for early AVM detection and to raise awareness for AVM’s, educate communities about this treatable condition, and to establish early detection screening programs. The Foundation is working on opening a Brain Imaging Center here on Long Island. This will open so many doors for early detection of not only Brain AVM’s, and Aneurysms, but will also detect other unknown conditions someone may have. Our imaging center will allow any child or adult, insured or not, to have the ability receive MRA imaging. What Are Pediatric AVMs? Arteriovenous Malformations (AVMs) are abnormal tangles of arteries and veins that can occur anywhere in the body. These abnormalities are typically congenital and are present at birth. They usually are not detected unless they cause seizures, weakness, or have ruptured and bled in the brain. Neurologic or life threatening sequelae are associated with each hemorrhage. There is a 4% per year risk of hemorrhage once an AVM has become symptomatic. Treatment is required to reduce that risk and subsequent problems associated with additional hemorrhage. Treatment for AVMs can be quite complex and it is critical that patients with this disorder be managed and surgically treated in a center with extensive AVM experience. Causes of Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) The cause of Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) is not known. AVMs are thought to be congenital (present at birth), and researchers believe that they may arise from developmental derangements at the embryonic stage of vessel formation (at the fetal stage). However, this theory has never been clearly established, and some researchers believe that AVMs may arise after birth. Unlike the association of head trauma, or other injuries with the development of dural arteriovenous fistulae (DAVF), there are no known environmental risk factors for AVMs. Most AVMs are termed “sporadic,” which implies that they arise spontaneously without a specific gene mutation being passed on from parent to child. There is no clear familial inheritance, except in families with Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT). HHT patients are at some 10,000 fold higher risk of developing a brain AVM than the non-HHT population. Importance of Early Detection Screening & Scanning Identifying and treating Brain Arteriovenous Malformations & Aneurysms before they rupture can and will save lives. If Brain AVM’s & Aneurysms rupture, effective treatment becomes more difficult, and generally a person’s chances of surviving are much lower. Brain AVM’s & Aneurysms that have not ruptured typically have little to no symptoms, until it’s too late. Wave of Change Gala The Paige Keely Foundation is hosting their upcoming Wave of Change Gala on October 6th 2021. The purpose of the Gala is to honor Paige, AVM Awareness month and to raise funding for our imaging center. All the proceeds of the Gala will be used to fund two MRA imaging machines. On September 9th Competition Subaru of Smithtown will be hosting the WRX STI Rallycross Car Show! Come see one of action sports’ most iconic athletes Travis Pastrana’s Rallycross Subaru WRX STI car in person! Travis Pastrana Successful Athlete Travis Pastrana has dominated rallying in the U.S. from 2006-2009. He has driven a Subaru Rally car from the beginning of his career and has won four consecutive championships with Subaru Rally Team USA. In 2017 Pastrana won his fifth nation rally title at the 2017 inaugural ARA championship. Pastrana is also a record holder for hill climb competitions. In 2017 he dominated the Mount Washington Hill Climb in New Hampshire, setting new records. Pastrana was driving a 600-horsepower Vermont Sportscar-prepared Subaru WRX STI on one of the most challenging race venues in the country. He completed the 7.6-mile climb in 5min and 44s breaking the previous record by more than 20 seconds. Vermont SportsCar Vermont Sportscar specializes in designing and manufacturing world-class competition cars, management of elite motorsports teams, and the pursuit of technological innovation. Winter has finally come to an end and spring is in full swing! There is no better time than April to get your car in tip-top shape for summer road trips or simply for driving around town! National Car Care Month in April is the time of year to give your car some extra attention. Basic maintenance is essential and can go a long way toward improving the safety and dependability of your vehicle, plus it helps avoid costly repairs down the road. Keep reading for a rundown of the car maintenance services we highly recommend for this time of the year. Show Your Subaru Some Love This April It is important to make sure your tires, brakes, and windshield wipers are ready for the rain and take care of any issues that may have occurred or been ignored during winter. Our team here at Competition Subaru of Smithtown strongly suggests scheduling a service to see a professional at our Service Center. Basic Vehicle Maintenance Check Tire Pressure & Tread Wear Most tire damage and wear is a result of driving on tires that are improperly inflated. Tires that contain the specified amount of air pressure last longer and contribute to vehicle safety. Tires that are not properly inflated can lead to poor traction and an increase in rolling resistance. Frequent tire rotations are essential to the life of your tires. It is recommended to rotate your tires after driving 5,000 to 8,000 miles to prevent uneven wear. Contact our Service Team with any questions or concerns you may have. Visit our Subaru Tire Store or shop for tires online. Check Brake System You may have used your brakes too often this past winter due to the snowy conditions. Icy roads adversely affect the car’s brakes due to the low friction between tires and the road. Most people change their brake pads after driving 10,000-20,000 miles and their rotors after driving 50,000-70,000 miles. You should also check to see if your brakes make a grinding noise or if your stopping distance has increased. We highly recommend seeing a professional to inspect your vehicle and help with these basic but very crucial maintenances. Check The Exhaust & Battery If you notice any unusual noises, it could indicate that your exhaust system may be damaged or have leaks. Exhaust leaks can be dangerous and must be corrected right away. A battery check will inform you if the connection is corrosion-free, tight, and clean. The battery should be securely mounted. If it is three years old or more, the battery should be tested and replaced if necessary. Oil should be checked at every fill-up. Check your vehicle’s owner’s manual for the recommended intervals.
