2021 Subaru Outback vs. 2021 Kia Niro

The 2021 Subaru Outback is a highly capable car, with an impeccable safety record and superb handling. But is this enough to compete with the likes of the 2021 Kia Niro, a compact car which is prized for its outstanding fuel economy and excellent overall value?

Design & Style

The Kia Niro is crisp and clean, with exterior lines that are conservative. While it is often mistaken for being a crossover, it is actually a hatchback, which is distinctive for its beefy fender flares, roof rails and proportions. Though it is not technically a hybrid, it has some of the best fuel economy in its class. Passengers within the cabin will be treated to an eight inch touch display with expressive upholstery and buttons that are readily accessible.

The Subaru Legacy is a lovely sedan that is capable of comfortably seating five adults. The trunk offers fifteen cubic feet worth of cargo space and those that upgrade will get seats that can be heated. The grille in front is split with one chrome band and the LED lights are medium in size and very attractive.

Technology & Safety

The NHTSA loves the Subaru Legacy, so much so that it gave it a perfect five star rating. The Legacy passed each crash test with perfect scores, leading the IIHS to give it the Top Safety Pick designation, for safety features such as blind area monitoring, a camera which is front facing, automated emergency brakes, and cruise and lane control. Passengers in the cabin will be treated to climate control which covers two zones, 4 USB ports, leather upholstery, twelve inch touch displays, keyless start and a sunroof.

The Kia Niro has also done well on its safety tests. However, it does not offer standardized impact prevention technology, which compromises the safety of those that don’t pay extra for it. Additionally, it failed to capture the prestigious Top Safety Pick because emergency automated brakes don’t come standard. Luxuries within the cabin include an instrument cluster, leather seats, ten inch touch display and sunroof.

Performance

The Kia Niro is equipped with an inline 4, 1.6 liter engine that is wedded to an electric motor and battery which allows it to generate 139 horsepower with a dual clutch automatic six speed gearbox. The Subaru Legacy is equipped with a flat 4, 2.5 liter engine that can generate 182 horsepower that is wedded to a paddle shifter and transmission which is continuously variable.

The Bottom Line

The Kia Niro is no match for the Subaru Legacy, which has superior safety credentials, a bigger touchscreen, better performance and looks, which makes it the champion.
