Design & Style
The Subaru Outback is capable of carrying five adults in comfort. As the name suggests, it has a rugged appearance which will appeal to outdoorsmen. The IIHS described its headlights as being “poor” which is a big deal given the fact that drivers need them in order to see in the dark and low lit conditions. It does come with blind area monitoring, emergency automated brakes, parking sensors and cruise control that is adaptive. Luxuries within its cabin include keyless start, leather upholstery and powered seats.
The Outback continues the outstanding safety record that Subaru is known for. It received the Top Safety Pick from the IIHS and a perfect 5 star rating from the NHTSA. It has all the safety features found in the Jeep Compass, with none of its drawbacks, including a camera which is front facing that provides superior vision. Amenities within its cabin include the choice of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, heated/cooled seats, sound insulation, climate control and a sunroof.
Performance
The Subaru Outback is equipped with a flat 4, 2.5 liter engine that can generate 182 horsepower with 176 pounds of torque that is wedded to a transmission which is continuously variable. The Jeep Compass is equipped with an inline 4, 2.4 liter engine that can generate 180 horsepower with 174 pounds of torque.
The Bottom Line
While the Jeep Compass and Subaru Outback are nearly tied when it comes to engine performance, the Jeep’s horrific crash test performance and poor headlights make the Subaru Outback the obvious winner.
