2021 Subaru Impreza vs. 2021 Hyundai Ioniq

The 2021 Subaru Impreza is a fast and agile car that is affordable with excellent safety ratings and superb fuel efficiency. How does it compare to the 2021 Hyundai Ioniq, a compact car with multiple powertrain options, intuitive controls and infotainment, and great fuel economy of its own?

Design & Style

The Hyundai Ioniq is best described as a near futuristic hatchback. The oval shaped exterior is smooth and sleek along the back and sides with a front that is sharp and angular with its LEDs and “H” insignia in the center. The cabin is functional yet basic, which shouldn’t be surprising given the price. Passengers will be presented with digital touch displays which have largely phased out the buttons and knobs, and the seats are well appointed.

The Subaru Impreza also comes in the form of a hatchback, with a roofline that has been tapered and fenders that are pronounced. It can also be purchased as a sedan, and both variants offer ample space for small items and cargo. The cabin is dominated by a seven inch touch display and the frame sits on impressive looking eighteen inch wheels.

Technology & Safety

The Impreza, like other Subaru models, has received a well-deserved reputation for its safety, capturing both the Top Safety Pick and five stars NHTSA rating. It is outfitted with all the modern countermeasures that drivers expect, including blind area monitoring, standardized automated emergency brakes, lane control that is active and cruise control. Amenities within the cabin include USB ports, the choice of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, cooled/heated seats and sound insulation with satellite radio.

The Hyundai Ioniq has many of the same features found in the Impreza, including automated emergency brakes, airbags, blind area monitoring and headlights with automated high beams. Amenities within its cabin include eight inch touch displays, climate control, powered seats, instrument cluster and keyless ignition. Those that pay extra will also get a sunroof with leather upholstery.

Performance

The Hyundai Ioniq is equipped with a lithium polymer based battery that is 38.3 kWh and capable of generating up to 134 horsepower. The Subaru Impreza is equipped with a more traditional flat 4, 2 liter engine that can generate 152 horsepower with 145 pounds of torque that allows it to accelerate from zero to sixty in about nine seconds.

The Bottom Line

While the Hyundai Ioniq is evenly matched with the Subaru when it comes to seating capacity, safety features and interior amenities, its performance is its greatest weakness, as are the rear seats and cargo space, which are too cramped, making the Impreza the winner.
