2021 Subaru Ascent vs. 2021 Kia Telluride
The 2021 Subaru Ascent is a full sized SUV with a spacious and airy cabin, stylish presentation and standardized safety tech. But how does it stack up against the 2021 Kia Telluride, a large SUV with capable powertrains, outstanding safety scores of its own and state of the art technology?
Design & Style
The Kia Telluride can seat a maximum of 8 passengers in style and comfort. It has all wheel drive with a dual box frame that is very pleasing to the eyes. The headlights are shaped like the letter C and sit in close proximity to the razor style grille. The cabin surfaces are covered in impressive finishes and textures which are arranged along horizontal planes that look and feel great.
The Subaru Ascent has large windows which provide excellent outward vision with a reduced beltline. The front is taller than its cousin the Outback and it uses elegant horizontal elements to form the bumper in front. The cabin is bright and airy with seats that provide excellent back support, large vents and an asymmetrical style dashboard.
Technology & Safety
As with other Subaru models, the Ascent has received outstanding safety scores, including a perfect five star rating from federal testing agencies. The IIHS gave it the prestigious Top Safety Pick for its many countermeasures, which include cruise and lane control, back seat reminders and multiple airbags. Amenities within the interior consist of smartphone software, eight inch touch displays, climate control which covers three zones, Bluetooth support, and heated/cooled seats that can be power adjusted.
The Kia Telluride also earned a Top Safety Pick award, but only for the EX and SX editions. It has excellent side and front collision protection with multiple airbags and automated emergency brakes, along with parking sensors and high beam lights which are automated. Luxuries within its cabin include eight inch touch displays, powered and heated/cooled seats, wireless charging for smartphones and keyless start.
Performance
The Kia Telluride is equipped with a V6, 3.8 liter engine that can generate 291 horsepower, that is wedded to an automatic eight speed transmission. The Subaru Ascent is equipped with a flat 4 2.4 liter turbo engine that can generate 260 horsepower that is wedded to a transmission which is continuously variable. It can tow a maximum of five thousand pounds.
The Bottom Line
While the Kia Telluride has lots of horsepower, this comes at the cost of a lackluster fuel economy, and though its interior amenities are largely identical to the Subaru, it doesn’t quite measure up when it comes to safety credentials and accolades, which makes the Subaru Ascent the winner.
